Witchspire's survival is magical — you will not starve, but resources replenish your power, not your hunger. That single design choice breaks most survival-game habits, so the first five hours are about learning to read the sky, bond familiars, and keep corruption away from your Sanctuary.

The First Five Hours

Walkthrough

01Choose Your Coven

At character creation you must pick a coven. Cloudpiercers lean melee/aggressive and give earlier access to offensive familiars. Foretellers lean mystical, with spirit-jump and blink-focused starting abilities. Neither coven is locked out of any content — the choice shapes your starting kit and outfit. New players who want to focus on combat should pick Cloudpiercers; players who prefer exploration and co-op support should pick Foretellers.

02Claim a Sanctuary Spot

Your Sanctuary is your home base. Use astral projection to build free of gravity — you can place walls, floors, and decorations in 3D without falling. Drop your first Sanctuary near a resource cluster (timber and stone) but away from the visible corruption zones on the map. The Early Bird Cosmetics Pack (Ornate Lamp, Traxio Carpet, Wooden Couch, Two Cushions) gives you four starting decoration items to make the Sanctuary functional.

03Summon Your First Forest

Witchspire's survival is magical — you will not starve, but resources replenish your power. To get timber early, use your "call forth forests" ability to spawn trees near your Sanctuary, then harvest them. Magical pickaxes let you harvest from range, which is safer when corruption creatures are nearby.

04Capture Your First Familiar

Find a low-level wild creature and defeat it in battle. Its spirit becomes collectible. Once collected, the familiar joins your roster and can be bonded long-term. Bonded familiars scale with you and can fill gaps in your build — a melee Cloudpiercer might want a ranged familiar, and vice versa for Foretellers.

05Read the Sky — Survive Meteor Showers

Meteors fall around the Witchspire and corruption zones. The first time you see the sky darken, blink to clear ground immediately (Foretellers have a head start here). After the impact, check the crater — sometimes useful resources land with the meteor, but corruption creatures often follow. Treat every meteor as both a threat and an opportunity.

06Invite a Coven — Co-op Basics

Up to four witches can share a Sanctuary. Cross-coven co-op works fine: a Cloudpiercers host can host Foretellers guests. Co-op is most useful for corruption runs (someone tanks, someone scouts) and for shared Sanctuary building — you can split decoration duties and build a much larger base than solo.

Common New-Player Traps

Avoid these
Treating it like a hunger-survival game
You do not starve. Resources replenish power, not hunger. Stop hoarding food and focus on familiars + corruption survival.
Building the Sanctuary too close to corruption
Corruption spreads. Build at least one screen-width away from the nearest visible corruption zone, or your base will be overrun within an in-game week.
Ignoring astral projection while building
Astral projection lets you build in 3D without falling. Use it for any vertical or ceiling-mounted decoration — manual placement will waste your time.
Hoarding spirits instead of bonding
Captured familiars do nothing until bonded. Pick one or two that fill gaps in your build and bond them early; their growth scales with playtime.
Skipping the Offline Mode toggle
Patch 0.1.3 added Offline Mode. If your connection is unstable, enable it before any long session — your save will sync back when you reconnect.

Where To Go Next

Expand

Once you have a bonded familiar and a working Sanctuary, the world opens up. Head to the corruption zones for higher-tier resources (with risk), explore the Mira Isles for decoration opportunities, or group up with three other witches for a co-op Sanctuary build.

Coven Familiar Pool Bias

Who bonds what

Your coven choice does not lock you out of any familiar, but it skews the pool of spirits you meet and bond with most easily. Pick a familiar that fills the gap in your own kit.

CovenBiasDetailsBest For
CloudpiercersAggressive / FrontlineEarlier access to offensive familiars; melee-leaning spirits that pair with a brave playstyle. A Cloudpiercer who wants a ranged companion can still capture one, but the pool skews toward direct damage.Solo players who lead charges into corruption zones.
ForetellersMystical / Support / ReconEarlier access to scouting, healing, and magical-harvest familiars. A Foreteller who wants a frontline familiar can still capture one, but the pool skews toward utility and ranged casting.Co-op support players and scouts who prefer to read the battlefield.

Where To Find Familiars

Regions

Wild creatures spawn across the world, with denser populations near resource clusters and corruption fringes. Lower-tier creatures appear near your starting Sanctuary; higher-tier ones gather closer to the Witchspire and inside corruption zones.

RegionWhat You Find
Starting Sanctuary areaLow-tier wild creatures, safe to capture as your first familiar. Resource clusters nearby make this a good early bonding loop.
Mira IslesDecoration-rich region (Patch 0.1.3 added villa decor). Spirits here lean utility — useful for builders and co-op hosts.
ShuddersandsHeat-baked region below the main map. Higher-tier creatures; Patch 0.1.3 targeted stability fixes for familiar swapping here.
Corruption zonesCorrupted creatures are more aggressive and drop higher-tier spirits. Approach with a bonded familiar already in tow — solo captures are risky.

First-Session Questions

Beginner
Do I need to manage hunger in Witchspire?
No — survival here is magical. You will not starve. Resources replenish your power rather than your hunger, so stop hoarding food and focus on familiars and corruption survival instead.
Is there an offline mode?
Yes. Patch 0.1.3 added Offline Mode, so the full game is playable without an internet connection. Your save files transfer between online and offline, so you can enable it before a long or unstable session without losing progress.
How do I get my first familiar?
Find a low-level wild creature and defeat it in real-time combat. On defeat its spirit becomes collectible — walk over it to add it to your roster. Then open the familiar roster and bond with one or two spirits; only bonded familiars scale with your level and join you in combat.
What boss order should I prepare for?
The five bosses climb in level: Corrupted Warden (18), Frost Wyrm (28), Shadow Council (35), Void Weaver (42), and the Witch King (50). Clear them in that order as your gear improves — the Witch King needs a second player for its phase 4 Doppelganger.
Can multiple witches share a Sanctuary?
Yes. Up to four witches can share a Sanctuary, and cross-coven co-op works fine — a Cloudpiercers host can invite Foretellers guests. Co-op is strongest for corruption runs and for splitting decoration duties on a larger base.
